The "wacker" is a self propelled compactor that is used
in areas where manual operation might put the operator at
risk. Operated like a radio controlled car, the wacker keeps
the operator at a safe distance.

Acetylene Oxygen torches are used to join
steel, and cut it apart. Preparing steel scrap for disposal
at the job site requires special skills in the latter. Here
a Building Futures student, fully outfitted in protective
clothing, learns to balance the two gases to produce the
most effective flame.

Sparks fly as scrap steel is cut into
small pieces, simulating the onsite cleanup on a
construction site.

Classroom work in an integral part of
training for any career. This is hands-on, practical
instruction with the actual tools the students will soon
encounter in the apprenticeship classes and on the job. |

It is no surprise that computers play an important
part in an apprentice's training. Here a young apprentice
studies using an interactive computer program, which tests
while it teaches.

Other computer applications include
simulations. Here a Building Futures student uses two
special "joy sticks" that mimic the actions of the controls
of a backhoe.

After the simulations comes the real
thing! You can be sure that this apprentice spent plenty of
time on the simulator, as each stroke of the shovel is
consistent, and accurate.

Building Futures is a program that
provides an opportunity to both acquire needed job skills
and to build the confidence to necessary to succeed in the
current job market. This proud Building Futures student has
obviously earned the respect of her instructors.
